Who Needs A Water Park?

Who needs to spend lots of money going to a water park?  Other than the lazy river, rinsing heifers just the kids and I, we look like we were at a water park or a bad wet t-shirt contest!

It actually works really well, except for Boy 2, he went out for about 10 minutes and just could not handle it and came back inside to play.  He is getting to the age were he is starting to tell when he cannot handle it.

Princess rinsed, Boy 1 brushed a blowed and Boy 3 and I were in charge of poop.  Yep, that's always my job, "Pooper Scooper!"  Oh well, Princess sprayed enough water all around that we all stayed well misted.  Boy 3 would get wet and then go stand in front of the fans and laugh.

Hubby came home an hour ago to get Boy 1, at one of the pastures at work they have ran out of water.  Hubby and Boy 1 are building hotwire fencing around a winter time pasture that has water.  They are building the fence and then will move the cattle.   We really need a good rain, like a four or five day steady rain.  The county fair is later in the week, hopefully it will rain then!  Anything at this point.

Supper is consisting of BLT sandwiches, cold slaw, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes.  When it is hot out and Hubby has worked since sun up, he does not like to eat anything real heavy or anything at all.  So I have to think outside the box, healthy and replenishing.

Stay Cool!
Have A Great Day:)

Fans!

It is so hot this morning that the sheep fan will not start and the back up sheep fan shook for a little bit and did a cough and then quit!
Me: I'll go get the stand up white fan from the attic, for today.
Hubby: we have Cousin A's fan we will use it, big turbo.
Me: Isn't that a lot of air for the lambs?
Hubby: we need another small fan anyway.
Me: Okay.

Now that I am replaying this in my head, I think we might be saving for another fan!
Back story on the fan that finally quit, for those of you that knew Dinker Sweatman, it was one of his, it is older than sin, he gave it to me when he bought new fans. As Hubby said, they don't make fans like they used to!

Have A Great Day:)

K7 Herefords Pizza Recipe

K7 Herefords Pizza Recipe

2/3 Cup Warm water
2T Yeast
2T Sugar
stir gently let rise a little then add rest of ingredients.
3T Oil
1/2t Oregano
2Cup Cold Water
2T Sugar
1 1/2 t. Garlic Salt
About 7 Cups of flour
Let rise until double.
Grease sheets with oil and sprinkle with yellow cornmeal.
Spread dough and let rise in pan, about 1/2 hour.
 Then bake 5-8 minutes.
Take out and add your toppings.  Bake again until done, about 15 minutes at 400*.
One batch makes two big pans.

Option: This is what I usually do when it is the 6 of us:
Place 3/4 of dough in pizza pan and use for pizza. Remaining dough make into breadsticks, I use a small circle pizza pan, lightly oil, sprinkle with yellow cornmeal, push out dough with your fingers, you could roll it, but I go for messy, Brush with melted butter, sprinkle with garlic salt and parmesan cheese. Cut with pizza roller, let rise, then bake until golden brown 10-12 minutes at 400*.

I use for toppings:
1 lb Cooked Ground Hamburger
1 lb Cooked Ground Sausage
1 tomato or two-depending on size
1 large Onion
1 Can tomato Sauce
3-4 Cups cheese, whatever I have graded

K7 uses Dill Pickles diced up and in the words of Boy 1- it is AWESOME!!

Have A Great Day:)

PS- It is 8pm and still to HOT to go work with pigs, sheep or heifers.

Travel Mugs!!!

Who do you think invented the travel mug? Why did they invent the travel mug?  A few years ago a friend of mine gave me a green travel mug.  She gave me it so I could travel the 20 minutes to school with warm coffee and not spilling any on me or the kids or the car.  So you are thinking-duh-you just answered your own question, a mom invented the travel mug for warm beverage while taking her children somewhere.  Not so fast! This morning Boy 1 needed help walking lambs and with the forecast we needed to walk at 7am.  Boy 3 and I were nominated, because we were awake.  My coffee had just got done brewing and I had a moment of longing to have that warm wonderful coffee, and it hit me, the green travel mug.  Of course I thought I was the smartest person ever and Boy 1 gave me an eye roll and a "Really Mom!".  It worked, lamb halter in the right hand and coffee in the left.  All was happy 2 laps to the mailbox and I loved it!  God did give us a beautiful morning, the sunrise was amazing and everything was still quite.  Hard to believe it is going to be 103* today.

Tomato update:
4 hours of tomato yesterday and we ended up with
7 Quarts of tomato juice
4 gallons of tomato juice
17 quarts of chopped tomato and onions (to use in spaghetti sauce etc.)
10 quarts of stewed tomato
I think that is a pretty good start, I would like to do tomorrow.

Have A Great Day:)

Tomatoes!

I have now moved on to making tomato juice! Blanch them, peel them, cut the bottoms off, quarter them, throw them in the "milkshake machine", add a little brown sugar, salt, pepper. Hit purée for a little bit. Pur into freezer bags! Oh la la- so this winter we shall eat and drink and have tomatoes!

Hubby is at work then is going to go get boy 1. Then it is all animals be washed! The attire for today, swimsuits!

Princess had a blast last night helping neighbor boy with his 4H steer and heifer, Hubby said he was real proud of her, she really did try to help. Princess also had to admit that her parents really do a lot of helping, washing and clipping, but this is not just the kids project, it is our way of life!

Now lets go get wet, I mean let's go wash!

Have A Great Day:)

Lazy Saturday-HA!!!

Hubby has gone to work.
Boy 1 is showing sheep with Cousin C.
Boy 2 is outside, for now, about an hour longer and he will be in.
Princess sleeping.
Boy 3 is playing.

So it seems pretty lazy right?  WRONG! I have more tomatoes to put up, when Hubby gets home we will ALL have to help wash and clip barrows (pictures & maybe video will be posted), wethers need washed and clipped and Hubby has to go over to neighbors to clip their 4H cattle.  At least there is a hose involved, so we will be wet and not just burning hot:)

Sunday is going to be dedicated to washing and clipping anything that says "mooo".

Have A Great Day:)

PICTURES...PICTURES...PICTURES!

After many comments and request here are some pictures, I promise I will add more from JNHE this weekend!
Boy 2 loves his job of emptying the manure!

Boy 1 showing one of the wethers last Friday, see Princess she was along for the ride!

Here is one of our Illinois kids, Boy 3 loves all of his Illinois Hereford siblings!
This has to be one of my favorite pictures of Princess.  I was just playing around with the camera and love this.

It is another late night here.  Hubby and kids got a Recip. cow in to go put an embryo in early in the morning.  Older two are going with Hubby, they love to go with him to watch the Embryologist.  Boy1 would love to be able to do that now.

Hubby also brought home a huge bag of tomatoes tonight so I will put more up tomorrow, no corn this year, but lots and lots of tomatoes!

Have A Great Night:)
PS- To all of our Angus friends in Louisville we pray you are all safe from today's storm!

2012 Sure Champ Hereford Owned Horned Female Final Drive, best comments ever by a judge!

Amish White Bread recipe

I tried this recipe yesterday and it was WONDERFUL!!!

2 Cups Warm water
2/3 Cup Sugar
1 1/2 TBLP Active Dry Yeast
In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water and yeast, stir. Let sit until yeast looks foamy.

1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
Mix salt and oil into above mixture.

6 Cups Flour
Mix in flour one cup at a time.  Knead dough on lightly floured surface until smooth.  Place in a well oiled bowl and cover with damp towel, allow to rise until double, about 1 hour.

Punch down and knead for a few minutes. Divide in half and place in 2 well oiled 9x5 loaf pans, or do not divide an dplace on jelly roll pan (this is what I did as we have lots of mouths). Allow to rise another 30 minutes.

Bake at 350* for 35-40 minutes or if on Jelly roll pan about an hour.

As soon as bread is out of oven brush with melted butter.

Let sit 10-15 minutes, serve warm or cold.  This bread reminded Princess over Beer Bread.  I would have taken pictures of it to show you, but it was so good there was nothing left!

Have A Great Day:)

All before 9:30am!

Heifers tied & fed
Sheep fed and clean water
Pigs fed
Tomato plant, Christmas Cactus, Hosta (not sure on spelling) all watered-these are the only plants I have still living!
Cereal served
Laundry started
Beds made
Put up 4 quarts of peaches
Made a peach Crisp (in the oven now)
We have done all this before 9:30am.
Seems pretty good, but why am I in such a rush? Ya, the vet is coming-sometime this afternoon-to ultrasound Princess' heifer, to check out her ovaries, then to pregnancy check Boy1's Shorthorn Plus and Hereford show heifers.

With this wonderful heat (sacrasim) we went out at 7pm last night to tie up the cow/calf pair, and the three fall heifers. Worked with all of them, if you have never seen an almost 2 month old calf on a halter, it is the push and shove show, one person pulls as the other stands behind and push and the other 4 laugh!  We did not come into the house until after 10pm.

The heat is already upon us this morning, so the Boy 2 is in the house until later this evening, Boy1, Princess and I are checking heifers, every hour, Boy 1 had 8:30a, Princess 9:30a, Me 10:30a and then repeat!  I really would rather be hot than cold, but this is over load hot!!!

Hubby said last night that later in the week tomatoes will be ready to put up and I will have an overload of supply.  Right now, here in the midwest tomatoes are the only thing producing and producing they are!

No more rush for me today, I am going to hang out with my kids.

Have A Great Day:)

PS: Here is a link to my sweet friends blog, it really hit home today.

Have A Great Day:)

Last Full Week

I am kinda sad today as I looked at the calendar this morning, it is the last full week of nothing schedule before school starts.  Where has the summer gone? Oh ya, showing cattle, sheep and pigs- so far we have had a blast and I am not going to dwell on the lack of days left, but rather on each day as a new 24 hours.

Tomatoes, Tomatoes, To-Ma -Toes! Yes, Hubbys boss has a wonderful garden and the tomatoes are ready to be put up! YIPPEE- I love canned tomatoes in the winter time in stew, chili, swiss steak etc.  Not looking like we are going to have ant sweet corn to put up, that is a bad thing, but this drought has really hurt ALL crops.

Cherish the rest of your summer break with your kiddos!

Have A Great Day:)

County Fair

Friday started very early with a 5:30 wake up, well at least for Hubby, Boy1, Boy2 and Princess.  They took the 2 barrows and 2 wethers to a one day show at nearby county fair.  Boy 3 and I stayed home as he did not feel good and neaither did I, fair flu or barn grud- not for sure.  Hubby said he ended up washing the barrows as Boy 2 was getting everyone in the county wet!  Wish I could have seen that:) Boy 2's pig weighed 288lbs and Princesses pig weighed 245lbs, they were in the same class, only 3 classes of barrows, Princesses got 4th and Boy 2 got 6th- this is not what you want, any showmom will tell you that, but today is Sunday and he is now over being beat by his sister!  After a lunch break Boy 1 showed his wethers and was 3rd with his 148lbs lamb and 6th with is 132lb lamb.  I am sorry I missed the kids showing, but what I am most sorry about is that I missed Hubby showing in the group class, Breeders Flock- which he calls Breeders Herd- now that would have been GREAT!

Saturday was another early morning as we decided to take the three Hereford heifers and the Shorthorn heifer back to the nearby county fair for the one day cattle show.  5:30am...again!  This time Cousin A and his friend R went with us and Hubby went to work for awhile.  Kids, A, R and I unloaded, Cousin A was on washrack next to 4 bottle calves, now this is funny, if you ever have been on washrack you know why, Cousin A got soaked! After we washed, kids blowed (Princess made curls in her heifer-uuuuhhh-sigh- learning-learning)  Then Hubby called and asked if we needed anything he was coming, YAY, YIPPEE! Okay, so let me stop and tell you how they haave show order, their county 4H and FFA jr. showmanship, senior showmanship, steer show. Then move on to breeding stock, Angus was first with the county 4H & FFA, then Open show.  This was for all breeds and it took a long while.  Finally, the kids got to show,  June was 1st in her class, Optima (Princess heifer) was 1st in her class and Champion Hereford and Daquarhi (Boy 1's heifer) was 2nd to Optima and Reserve Hereford.  Boy 1's Shorthorn was Champion Shorthorn was Champion Shorthorn.  At this county fair they have supreme heifer overall and from our county we had 5 out of the 8 and our kids made up 2 of them- way to go our county! Anyway, Princess was Supreme Heifer with her Optima, which Rumor has it her mom will sell in Albin Farms sale this September, (just a side note!)  Princess was very surprised and was smiling from ear to ear.  After we packed our trailed, rather quickly and got home and took nice long COOL showers.

Guess what, someone had to make supper, Hubby went and found a few ears of sweetcorn, which is few and far between with this drought, I made bacon cheeseburgers and potatoe skins and we were all in bed by 9pm.

Sunday morning ( today) all three boys are up before 7:30am and now we are upstairs watching Spirit and waiting a few hours before we make brunch, waffles, scrambled eggs and bacon.  Cousin A and R are to vome back and pick up his September Heifer from K7 that has been here a few days.  We need to unload the trailer and Boy 1 wants to get a halter on FineWine.

Thanks for reading this very long post!

Have A Great Day:)

PS- The owners of K7 Herefords and Albin Farms do not sponsor this blog, I just wanted to give a background on where parts of our herd comes from.

Home!

Boy 1 is HOME!!!! Boy 3 is so happy and has been climbing all over him.  Boy 1 got out of the truck Gpa backed the truck and trailer to the pen where GreatGpa's cow/calf was I opened the gate, Boy 1 put her right up on the trailer before the Gpa's even knew what happened.  I was a very proud Momma:) Now I am doing his laundry so we all can load back up in the early hours tomorrow morning to go to a little county fair and show the pigs and the sheep.  One more show under them is always a good thing!  It will be the first time that the kids have ever showed pigs, so I will video it and take pictures.  We worked with the pigs last night, Boy 2 was told by Trent Loos to have a marshmallow on a stick in front of them and they would keep their heads up and follow a little bit.  It worked with Biggs, but not Ditty.  Ditty is a rascal, he likes to run and squeal and really not follow directions- not good for show ring!  Oh well, it is a life experience.

I wanted to share something that Princess said last night.  She came in and said that there was three words that everyone from the Opening Ceremonies speaker to the Owned Judge said that Hereford kids know Respect, Leadership and Responsibility.  She asked if I thought all kids had that or just Hereford Kids.  I told her that it depends on the parents, but  yes Hereford Kids, farm kids have a little more, I think. Princess: "why?" I said do you think non farm kids go to the barn before school or right after school?  Do you think that during a bad snow storm do non farm kids go and roll out straw and check on animals and get up in the middle of the night to check on calving?  I asked do you think that non farm kids have to stand in the school parking lot to beat off cow poop from their school shoes because they ran to the barn on the way to the car to see a new calf?  Then she said "Good Night".  I think it gave her something to think about.  I did not write that to make anyone mad, farm life is not for everyone, and not everyone can live on a farm, I am just thankful to the Lord that we get to raise our 4 kids on the farm, in all it's mud, blood, sweat and tears!

Have A Great Day:)

Videos

As you all can see we have been playing on youtube! The kids wanted me to upload these two and I am sure when more from this past week are on youtube we will post.

Boy 1 called from Jersyville, Fred was 3 out of 7 and Franky was 4 out of 8.  They one the pair of wethers class.  Boy 1 even showed for Baa, that's the cousin he is with, he showed her Hampshire (a breed of sheep) wether and was awarded Reserve Champion Wether Overall.  Now they are headed to Jacksonville to show tomorrow!

Princess wants to know is anyone "really reading about us?"  So comment on the page if you would like and tell her where you are from-please!

Have A Great Day:)

PS- Only 1 load of laundry left-YIPPEE!!!!

Livin' The Hereford Life!

Punk'd in the Barns: Hereford Life

This is so funny and Boy 3 and I and Princess' heifer Optima is in it.  Hubby gave permission- he really LOVES me!

Great End to JNHE 2012 and Home!!!

Saturday night was the JNHE banquet, everyone was hot and tired, but the room was backed.  You know how I was telling you Boy 1 was happy about his judging scores, well he should be, he was 2nd overall the junior division.  He was so stinkin happy and he received a leather bound judging notebook.  When Hubby called his judging coach/4H leader she said that was great, but he will start to do reasons from now on, that scares him a little because of his speech, I think he will do just fine with practice.

Sunday Mornings alarm went off even earlier than Saturday mornings alarm!  Since Boy 1 only had 1 to show I opted to stay in bed a couple hours longer and then get the others up and at the show by 6am.  At 7am I loaded the 4 kids and walked over to the showring to Cowboy Church with Susie McEntire, she has a Cowboy Church on Sundays on RFD-TV, she and her husband were amazing and a GREAT way to start the day.  My dad said when he walked into the barn and Cowboy Church was over the intercom systems he said there was a calm, clippers were still going, fans running, but not a lot of other noise.  Isn't amazing how 1 hour of Praising God can calm a whole barn!   Boy 1 was in the 3rd class and after standing in the middle of the Bred and Owned show, he was not happy, he was in a class of 11-again.  He was the first one in the ring and with Daquarhi (that's his March Heifer) her only fault is she is a little short strided (she takes small steps for her size), but being first helps her so she can walk faster and Boy 1 doesn't have to hold her back.  Which it all came into line as Daquarhi and Boy 1 were 2nd!  He came out of that show ring with the biggest smile on his face, he did it, he wanted 1st as everyone does, but 2nd is damn good when there are 1269 head of cattle in one place.  So very proud of all our Illinois Kids and their Parents and Grandparents.

I might not have mentioned it, but my parents came on Friday, so that means we had 4 generations.  Not many kids can say that!  The GreatGrandparents and the grandparents left and took Boy 1 home Sunday after he showed, as he went to show the wethers at 2 county fairs.  Hubby, Princess, Boy 2, Boy 3 and I did not get home until Monday, we left at 6:30am and drove in the driveway at 2:30pm.

I will post later on what the pastures, crops and water situation is like here.- NOT GOOD! Off to do laundry and unpack the trailer-falalalala:)

Have A Great Day!

Princess is done showing for this JNHE!

Princess has had a great day, she is so tired, but has had a blast at JNHE. She gets tomorrow off from showing as both of hers showed today in the owned show.  Boy 1 had today off, as he just brought 1 and she is a March she will show tomorrow, 3rd class in.  So the wake up call is for 3am! Yes, AM!

This evening we are headed to the awards banquet and then off to bed!

Have A Great Day:)

Pizza Hut-THANK YOU!!!

I know weird title, but after the longest bred and owned show I have ever sat through, I burnt the pork chops.  It was hot and some of us may be a little cranky/sleepy.  So when I figured out the chops were now leather I thank the Lord for the travel guide that was in the kids' goody bucket. It was Pizza Hut to the rescue! $22.00 and 40 minutes later they delivered two pizzas, breadsticks and a 2 liter of soda to the front of the cattle barn.  And guess what, no on complained about not having pork chops.

Kids did AWESOME showing yesterday, so proud of both of them, Boy 1 wanted to stand a little higher, but the middle of a class of 11 is darn good to me!

Today as we emerged before dawn it was warm and humid, now as dawn is upon us it is "chilly" like in the 60's.  Princess is laying in the chute hammock and just asked for a blanket- No way- it has been so hot, like most of the country, I told her to enjoy it and take a nap.  Boy 1 gets the day off, they split the Owned show into two days and Princess shows both of hers today and Boy 1 shows his tomorrow, third class in, so that means the moon will still be up and some college kids will still be out, when we are headed to the barn.  Oh well, we have had a blast!

OOO- got to brag on Boy 1, his judging coach will be so proud of him, he got 3-50 and 1-48, he dropped to points on the steer class.  He even was asked to be apart of Virginia's team, we have not got the team results back yet, but still his individual scores were AMAZING! Princess said not to tell anyone she even judged as her scores were so bad- she needed her pep talk from her judging coach-not sure what that involves, but I guess it was not what I said " I Love You, have fun."

I have to go blow legs and bellys now, the kids do not do those parts,  they forget, oh well I like to blow dry the heifers and it is a very cool morning in the beautiful state of Nebraska!

Have A Great Day:)

Day 4

It is Bred and Owned heifer show today along with, cow/calf, bulls and steers tonight. So what does that mean, it means the alarm went off at 5am! It means that boy 2 is sou d asleep inthe chute hammock, it means boy 1 is blowing Princess' big heifer, it means Princess is walking back and forth to was rack, it means hubby is washing it means boy 4 is watching a movie. So I am sitting in the corner with my cup of coffee- THANK YOU Illinois Herefords! So long from Grand Island, I will update later!

Have A Great Day!

4th of July

Happy 4th everyone!

I have a new thing I just found out about, well it is not new, but new to us. As most of you know I am the biggest sucker for books, especially books written by twin girls from Maryland that have Hereford cattle. They are the Chaney girls and they have written 4 kid books, the first is about their bottle calf, 2nd is about a dairy farm, their mom was raised on one, 3rd the bottle calf is grown up and becomes a mom, 4th is about their friends, which just happens to be a friend of my families, ranch in Nebraska. Very well written and they evencome with lesson plans, watch out Miss Martha and Miss Becky, you just might happen to get these on loan! I give it a 5 star rating. Here is a website www.rebeccalongchaney.com.

Last night was opening ceremonies and it was very fitting the night before the fourth of July we have the parade of states all 656 jr exhibitors. Then as speaker was the USA Mens Bobsled team brakeman, his main focus was do your best even if no one is watching or if you don't think it is worth it, because really everything is worth something. I thought this was fitting on the night before our countries birthday.

Today boy 1 and Princess have been to judging contest, Princess did not do so well as she had a headache and needed her pep talk from her judging coach back home, but I was not calling her at 7am. Boy 1 got all 50's except he got 48 on steers. Still really good! Right now all but boy 3, who is napping in the hammock, are at the fitting clinic and at 4pm we are going to go cheer on our Illinois fitting team in the contest.

Tomorrow is showmanship, so wish Princess and Boy 1 well.

Have A Great 4th of July!

What's to Eat?

So what do you eat while at JNHE? Since there are 6 of us there is no way we can eat out, plush who wants to go sit in a restaurant with 6 people who smell like... Like...cow,barn,hot? So we pack up the small fridge, microwave, 2 crockpots and the toaster. Yesterday for breakfast we had breakfast burritos, I made ahead and froze, the warmed them in microwave. Lunch was ham sandwiches or PBJ, chips and cookies. Supper was chicken garlic pasta and butter bread. This morning was coffee caked or cereal. Lunch today will be provided by Illinois Hereford Women, PIZZA!! Supper is hamburgers.

Busy day for kiddos, 3 on 3 basketball tourney, which boy 1 and princess are both on teams. Princess is going to the queens tea. State pictures and opening ceremonies! Bunny and Gpa are gone to the Case IH tour this morning, so kids and I are in charge.

Hope You All Have A Great Day!

More later from JNHE!

JNHE

Why am I sitting in a barn with 1500(give or a take a few)? Why am I sitting in a barn where the only thing you hear is the hum of the fans? Why am I sitting in a barn in Nebraska? For our kids! It is that simple. Some families take vacations to Disney, Hawaii, the beach. Will we, probably not. Why? Our family has chose to take vacations to Junior National Hereford Expo, the last 3 years and would not have it any other way. What is JNHE? Family camp, but we bring the heifers. We are all up by 6am, we wash heifers, blow them, feed them. All done by 8am, as someone has an activity that starts. Wether it be one of our kids or one of our Illinois kids, they go. Why? It is their extended family. Yes,there are 10 of them, give or take a few, they go, they watch, they cheer and they give support. This is what we do instead of vacations, yes, we work, but we also have oned heck of a good time!
